Rescuers resumed the search for a 5-year-old boy who was swept away by floodwaters as another violent storm hit California, with swamped communities, millions of flood warnings and power outages for more than 100,000 customers in the state. A The search for the boy was called off Monday after five hours due to dangerous water levels, the San Luis Obispo County Sheriff's Office said. The boy's mother was driving a truck around 7:50 a.m. about 35 miles inland from the coast. The vehicle ran aground in flood water while attempting to cross a river.
The mother managed to escape from the truck with the help of bystanders, but the boy was washed down the river. A flash flood warning was issued for the region.
A search Monday for the boy involving 17 firefighters, commercial divers and a helicopter turned up only his shoe, a Cal Fire spokesman confirmed. Rescuers resumed the search Tuesday without success and will try again Wednesday, the San Luis Obispo County Sheriff's Office said.
